I arrive at JOMAC at about half past two. The weather is overcast, the wind cold and gusty. There are not many cars in the car park.<br />I've come out for some gliding trimming flights with a new cg position.<br />I'm following Daryl Perkins' advice to the MGA - "move the cg back until the aircraft gets away from you. Then move it forward a little".<br />I get out of the car and walk towards the pit area. I greet a couple of members. I put my card on the frequency board and go back to the car.<br />I get out my bungee and make my way onto the field. I notice two members at the top of the glider field with an electric soarer. I wave to them but they do not respond. Perhaps they are looking the other way. They are about a hundred metres from me.<br />I lay out the bungee down the track that runs through the area of blackjacks and khaki bos. I am in the process of doing a range check when one of the electric flyers comes rushing across the field.<br />He is clearly very angry.<br />What are you doing here? he asks. Don't you know that you must introduce yourself when you arrive? You are discourteous. Are you even a member? I shall report you to the committee.<br />I am taken aback by his aggressive attitude.<br />Well you were at the top of the field and I'm half way down. It seems OK to me. And yes I am a member and by all means report me to the committee, I reply. Feebly I add, and I'm sorry if I upset you.<br />He storms off.<br /> I continue to get ready and finally hook up the bungee. As I am walking back the same member approaches again. He is no less aggressive than before.<br />Are you going to launch now? he asks. I look at my glider hooked onto the bungee and say. Yes I did think I might launch.<br />He shouts and screams some more and moves away. His mate is still flying at the upper end of the field. He is over the long grass, a good hundred metres away.<br />I'm on the crosswind leg of the landing approach when he appears again.<br />Can't you see that we are practicing landings? How can you stand in the middle of the field?<br />I ask him to wait until I am on the ground but he continues his aggressive diatribe. By this time I am a little annoyed. I suggest to him that he might like to Get a Life. My suggestion is not well received. He continues shouting and yelling.<br />On its approach my glider drops a wing, turns right and flies into Ted's Xtrail in the car park. Oh dear.<br />It suffers some damage and makes a small dent in Ted's door.<br />I find Ted in the pit area. Um...Ted, I say, I've made a dent in your door. Do you want to have a look?<br />He has a look.<br />What would you like me to do? Our club has become the RC Flying Club of choice in the Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg. We have welcomed many new members and the club is vibrant and flourishing. For the<br />last year, our club has imposed a limit of 6 aircraft airborne at one<br />time, and have never had an incident related to having too many aircraft<br />in the sky. The way we control it is to never allow more than six<br />transmitters to be booked out of the transmitter impound at any one<br />time. This means that if 6 aircraft are airborne, it will only be for a<br />very short period of time, due to starting of engines etc. We also<br />impose strict circuit discipline and insist that EVERY pilot has a<br />spotter. The spotter's only job is to look for other aircraft and warn<br />the pilot of impending collisions. The spotter also watches aircraft<br />that are landing or taking off, as this is generally the highest safety<br />risk. This to showcase our club, show kids that Play Station 2 isn't the only fun one can have with a joy stick !!!! and raise a bit of cash to help pay for the additions to the club. <br />An enthusiastic committee has volunteered (or was volunteered) their services - but as always we need MORE willing hands. <br />To date the following aircraft have been confirmed - Mike George's Delta - launched from the back of a vehicle moving at 70kms/per hour - something to see if you haven't been lucky enough to see it yet - the JOMAC Gary Sport will banner tow again - Helicopters - Gliders - Jets - Sky Divers - Full sized aircraft and Crane Rides and of course the by now legendary "Masters of Disaster" night show. <br />We are giving JOMAC Pilots first preference with display flying - please email me by the end of the weekend (3rd October) with the type of aircraft you would like to fly and your (very NB) frequency. <br />We will also be having a static display - so if you are harboring a really cool Airey that is way too precious to fly - let us know - by return email - you will need to bring a table and we will try to collect as many Gazebos as possible to keep the sun off. <br />If you have a gazebo you are happy to lend to the club for the day please email me soonest. <br />It is very important to note the following: <br />* We must have PRIOR notification of your willingness to fly in the display and/or participate in the static display - otherwise CHAOS will surely reign!! <br />* An Entrance fee will be charged - as we are inviting the public as well - but will be refunded on the completion of only an hours volunteer work - Report to Blue Container for a refund <br />* Crane rides will be R5.00 per person and are well worth it - the view is quite awesome (Thank you Oliver for the generous donation of one of your Cranes, the crew to operate it and the diesel to get it to the airfield) <br />* The Bar will be firing on all cylinders and the Beer Machine will be running at full speed <br />* Braai Packs will be on sale as will Wors rolls <br />* The camping has been moved onto the glider field, more room for all to enjoy the sights, and much more room for lots more campers - and security will be provided <br />* Tents - R50.00* Caravans - R100.00* REGISTRATION is essential (See SIMPLE registration form in the BLOG) <br />* All tickets can be prepaid to a committee member or purchased from the Blue Container on the day. <br />The 6th of November looks set to be a great day. <br /> <br /><strong>Indigenous Tree Project</strong> <br /> <br />"A plan is afoot to plant indigenous, fast growing trees in the car park.
